1rst day.

The start has been nicer than what I expected. Little by little. Soft.

On our first day we made a primary source research . The topic was whool. Quite a complex task as London is burning on flames and anyone uses wool. But well , we managed to find some. I took some pics and made quick drawings.

Primary resources reseach gives an starting point to all types of projects. I personally find real life drawing exciting.

The school´s rythm is quite accelerated. That makes me happy.

Reflection on Ideas Factory

So we have started. For our first project we have to collect all possible information about Chiharu Shiota+body as a material+carry as an action.

I´ll try to be concise. Shiota does both performance and instalation. She has used in many of her works thread as the main product. With a similitude to spider webs , Chiota encloses varied elements, such as pianos, letters and beds. Some essays point out that Shiota´s attempt is to perpetuate objets in the memory, but I have found her works opressive and neurotic. Some people find them dreamlike, I find them sinister.

The way threads hang out from the ceilings and hold objects links with the action "carry".  For the instalation "The key in the hand", the artist uses elements with an emotional weight that links to the idea of memory. A useless key is the last reminder of a door that may never be opened again. The metaphor of trying, to some extent, to maintain memories is almost neurotical, as it uses tens of thousands of keys and red threads.

So , we may agree that Shiota tries to carry a massive amount of memories. Now then, what material does she use? For this task we are working with the idea of "body". Let´s extend this description to all bodies apart from the human; bodies can also be industrial, like chairs or buildings. At the end all bodies , both made by nature or by the human inteligence, have purposes. If chairs exist, it is because the are useful. Chiota´s threats can be considered as the body.

Let´s also try to define "carry".The most practical definition for my purposes is : to move and contain your own mass. Each human carries their own bodies. Pregnant women carry two bodies as well. On a metaphorical view, to carry my own weight (responsibilities, thoughts, personal needs, etc) is healthy, but to carry someone else´s is unhealthy. From this point of view, Chiota´s actions seem to be desesperate and depict a nervious need of keeping/carrying memories even if it´s unhealthy.

So far these are my thoughts. I´ll try to find images that depict the nostalgic need of maintaining memories. I may search for old deteriorated egyptian or roman buildings.

Shiota´s installations are constantly seen as a hopeful reflection of nostalgia. To keep the past alive. To perpetuate life. I find it suffocating. The massive amount of webs not only holds the object, but forbids the public to pass through. It throttles space.

I come with the doubt of what sort of things are worth remembering. So I started looking at pictures of roman and egyptian architecture. Of statues. Attempts to immortalize a governent, a religion or a person. They were successful, of course, but there is something within it that smells of dampness. Sometimes the neurotic need of maintaining alive memories is as tragic as letting a corpse get rotten in the common room. It´s dead and there is nothing left to do.

I come up with two ideas: The absurdity of keeping dead things as a memory and the people behind these majestic architecture heritage (who carried the process of construction?).
